KBI UK has supported the refurbishment of an important community facility in the East Marsh area of Great Grimsby.
First opened in 2002, ‘Your Place’ is a community centre and garden that offers free access to arts, crafts, gardening and support workshops. Used extensively by the local residents, the centre was in need of some TLC and received it from Woodland Property Services. The company took the lead in delivering the extensive renovation works, including the complete refit of the centre’s much used kitchen. Having worked with KBI on previous occasions, the company called upon our specialist services to install a new access path. The path runs down the centre of a poly-tunnel that is used to grow thousands of plants, which are then sold by the centre in order to generate funds.
However, the old gravel path was unable to accommodate wheelchair users, restricting it to more able-bodied users. With sprinklers used within the poly-tunnel to water the plants, standing water was also a big issue for the users.
KBI Flexi™-Pave was used to resurface the path, creating a smooth, hard surface that would improve user access and be completely free from standing water due to its high porosity. The new pathway has proved a big hit with users, increasing the amount of people that can participate in the maintenance of the plants growing within the tunnel.
Chris Taylor is the project manager at Your Place:
“The work done by KBI UK will make such a big difference to the garden facility that we offer to the local community. Visually the polytunnel is now more attractive and from a practical view is now more accesible to people of all abilities. We have had so many positive comments from people who use the garden, and our volunteers love the new surface. We are still amazed at how it can be hard but allow water to soak through it – the best of both worlds! Since the new surface has been laid we have been able to involve one gentleman who has recently become completely blind. He wanted to work in the garden but the old uneven loose stone surface would have been too diffiuclt for him to move on. Thanks to the new surface, with the help of his carer he is now able to get around the polytunnel. The team that came to install the Flexi-Pave was so quick and efficient, and we would like to say a big thank you to KBI for being so willing to be part of this project.”
KBI UK Managing Director Graham Pell commented on the project saying:
“Your Place is a very important part of this community, which was obvious to us from the first contact we had with the team that run the facility. What pleases us most about this particular installation of KBI Flexi™-Pave is the fact that it will allow more people to access this inspiring place.”
